Bicolored Toby

Canthigaster smithae is a species in the pufferfish family (Tetraodontidae).

Description

Characterized further by dark to medium brown on upper head and back and white below; faint brown to yellowish stripe from chin to lower tail base; yellowish rim around the eye; blue bands radiating from eye; caudal fins with dark brown upper and lower margins; depth of body at origin of anal fin 2.7-3.1 in SL; head length 2.1-2.5 in SL; snout length 1.5-1.9 in head length; caudal peduncle depth 2.3-3.5 in head length; slightly rounded caudal fin.

Distribution

Western Indian Ocean: Agalega Islands, Mauritius to Durban, South Africa. Also Maldives.

Habitat

Inhabits outer reef slopes. Solitary. Found on clear inner reefs, often on slopes near bases of steep walls with mixed rubble and boulders in depths of about 30 meters.
