Thrush Sneaky Wrasse

Pteragogus turdus is a species of marine fish in the wrasse family, Labridae, native to the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific.

Description

A small, highly cryptic wrasse with a mottled reddish-brown, brownish-green, or olive body pattern designed for camouflage. It features a compressed body, a distinctive pale or whitish stripe running from the snout through the eye, and a prominent high spiny dorsal fin. Like others in its genus, it possesses a dark ocellus (eyespot) on the gill cover, which helps deter predators.

Distribution

Widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific region, including Indonesia (such as Sulawesi and the Wakatobi islands), Southeast Asia, and expanding across various reef systems in the Western Pacific and Indian oceans.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow coastal reefs, protected lagoons, and weed-rich areas. It is a secretive, demersal species that heavily relies on dense algal beds, seagrass, hydrozoan colonies, and sponge-covered rubble. It spends most of its time hidden within vegetation, moving rapidly and cautiously between shelters.
