Description

Plectropomus maculatus is one of eight species from the Plectropomus family.

Description

It has a slender, elongated body that can reach up to 125 cm in length, though individuals around 40–70 cm are more common. The body is primarily orange to reddish, adorned with numerous bright blue or white spots evenly distributed across its surface. These spots create a striking contrast and help the fish blend in with coral reefs. The head is large, with big eyes and powerful jaws. The mouth is wide, equipped with sharp teeth perfect for seizing prey.

Distribution

They are found in the Western Pacific, including Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Arafura Sea, Solomon Islands, and Australia.

Habitat

It inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and sandy areas at depths of 1 to 100 meters. It prefers shelter among coral or rocky formations, where it can hide from predators and ambush prey. It is an active predator. Its diet consists of small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods, which it captures with its powerful jaws and rapid strikes.

It is a solitary species and displays territorial behavior, guarding its hunting grounds from other fish. It is diurnal, hunting during the day and hiding in coral or rocky shelters at night.
