Chlorurus enneacanthus is a species of marine fish in the family Scaridae. It is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean region.
Other names: Green Parrotfish.

Description

The captain parrotfish is a medium-sized fish and can reach a maximum length of 50 cm.

Like other parrotfish, they are characterized by an elongated, compressed body and a rounded muzzle. The scales are large and cycloid.
It is characterized by its green-blue color, it has a slightly rounded caudal fin which is somewhat thinner in the juveniles.Like most fish of its genus, the lips do not cover the surface of the teeth.
Its body is greenish on its back, its scales are slightly edged with lavender pink. The outer teeth are green.

It exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism, with some males transforming into females during growth. The color patterns vary between different stages of growth and depending on gender.

Distribution

Western Indian Ocean: known so far from Mozambique, Mauritius, Chagos Archipelago, and Maldives to Christmas Island.

Habitat

Found on shallow fringing reefs. Usually in areas with dead coral and rubble. Forms small groups. Feeds on benthic algae.
