Description
It is a medium-sized butterflyfish. Its body is white with a black pattern of large scales on it which becomes a little yellowish towards the belly. A small black bar is running through the eye and three wide bars on the body. Its caudal fin has black vertical stripes in it. It grows up to 8 inches (20 cm).
Distribution
Western Pacific: Japan, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, China, and the Philippines.
Habitat
Inhabit rocky areas and coral reefs. Often in pairs or groups. Oviparous. Form pairs during breeding
In aquarium
This species is not recommended for beginners, as they have to have special care. They need a minimum of a 55 gallon aquarium, with the temperature being anywhere from 75-82° F. They have a diet of invertebrates, so they should not be housed with them. They may harm crabs and shrimp, clams, feather dusters, anemones and similar tankmates. Some may require a diet of corals or polyps, although most will eat brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, scallops, clams, corals and sponges.
