Description

Ophichthus polyophthalmus is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels). It was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1864.

Other names: Many-eyed Snake-eel, Large-spotted Snake EelManyeyed Worm EelOcellated Worm Eel or Yellow-spotted Snake Eel.

Description

Males can reach a maximum total length of 62.5 centimetres (24.6 in). It is pale red salmon in color, yellow spots on head, yellowish ocelli with dark margins on body. Gill opening ventral.

Distribution

It is a tropical, marine and freshwater-dwelling eel which is known from the Indo-Pacific, including East Africa and the Hawaiian Islands.

Habitat

It dwells at a depth range of 2 to 25 metres (6.6 to 82.0 ft), and inhabits sand and rubble sediments near coral reefs
