Anisotremus virginicus is a species of grunt native to the western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Brazil and the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. It is of minor importance as a commercial food fish and is also popular as a game fish though it is reported to sometimes contain the ciguatera toxin. It is also a popular fish in public aquariums.

Description

It has an oval, laterally compressed body, giving it an elegant and compact appearance. Adult individuals typically reach lengths of 20–40 cm, with some growing up to 50 cm.

The body is silvery-gray to blue with golden hues and striking horizontal stripes that create a vivid contrast. One or two golden stripes often run along the lateral line. It has two black bars: one from nape through eye to mouth, another from origin of dorsal fin to base of pectoral fin. Fins are yellow.

The head is robust with a blunt profile. It has thick lips and a relatively small mouth, characteristic of the grunt family.

A unique trait is its ability to produce grunting sounds that resemble pig-like noises, giving it the nickname "porkfish." These sounds are used for communication and to deter predators.

Distribution

Western Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda and USA (Florida) to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Habitat

It inhabits warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, including coral reefs, lagoons and coastal areas with sandy bottoms.

The fish is commonly found at depths of 5 – 30 meters, although it may inhabit deeper waters. It often hides among coral and rocks, especially during the day.

It is omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, such as mollusks, worms, and crustaceans, as well as algae and other vegetation. Young picks parasites from the bodies of larger fishes.
It forages mainly at night, scouring the seabed for food.

Juveniles sometimes form small schools, while adults typically live alone or in pairs.
