Rhinecanthus assasi is a species of fish in the family Balistidae, the triggerfishes. It occurs in the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.

Other names: Picasso Triggerfish and Arabian Picassofish.

Description

The fish reaches up to 30 centimeters long. It is tan above and white below with blue stripes between and below the eyes. Its base color ranges from cream-white to greenish yellow to lavender, their pattern make it an interesting fish to watch. Especially the black an blue vertical stripes running through the orange eyes make it stand out.

Distribution

Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea to the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.

Habitat

It is a fish of coral reefs. Its diet includes invertebrates. Inhabits shallow sandy and rubble areas of coral reefs. Juveniles are commonly found on reef flats. Feeds on benthic invertebrates.
